Did You Know: The Prominent Fashion Designer Vera Wang

Do you feel like quitting when something in your life seems to fall apart? There may be a lot of ups and downs in life, but you must keep on striving for the best. If you fail at one field, be the best in another. Look into Vera Wang’s story for example. She never gave up until she reached the top.

Vera Ellen Wang is an American fashion designer of Chinese descent, but was born and raised in New York City. She was born on June 27, 1949.

Before she became famous in the fashion industry, Vera Wang is a former figure skater. She competed but failed to enter the U.S. Olympics in 1968. Moreover, she graduated from an all-girls institution in Manhattan, The Chapin School, in 1967. She also attended University of Paris, and earned her degree in art history at Sarah Lawrence College.

Upon failing in figure skating, she diverted her attention to fashion industry. Vera Wang became a fashion editor at Vogue immediately after graduating, hence, making her the youngest one among the staff. She worked for more than 15 years before she left to join Ralph Lauren as director of design for two years.

After gaining enough knowledge on entrepreneurship, Vera Wang opened her own bridal boutique in Carlyle Hotel at Madison Avenue in New York City. Initially, it only sells couture gowns from Carolina Herrera, Guy Laroche, and Christian Dior. Eventually, she honed her skills in fashion designing after years of practice, and launched her own signature label. Vera Wang became popular for her wedding gowns.

Aside from making wedding gowns for public figures such as Ivanka Trump, Mariah Carey, Victoria Beckham, Avril Lavigne, and for both Khloe and Kim Kardashian, she also produced evening wears and has been worn by Michelle Obama.

Wang also designed costumes for figure skaters like Silver medalist Nancy Kerrigan for the 1994 Olympics. She was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame for her contributions to the sport as a costume designer.

Vera Wang’s success continues until today. From her boutique in NYC, she also now offers wedding gowns and coutures in Australia, Europe, and Asia. Wang launched David’s Bridal in 2011 which offers more affordable bridal gowns than Vera’s designs. Way back in 2002, Wang also explored home fashion by launching Vera Wang China and Crystal Collection. In 2007, she partnered with Kohl and opened Simply Vera which offers ready-to-wear clothing.

Due to her excellent skills and designs, Vera Wang received various awards such as Womenswear Designer of the Year, selected by Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 2005, and Andre Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006.

Wang separated with her husband, Arthur Becker, in 2012. They wedded in 1989 and lived in Manhattan with their two adopted daughters. Cecilia, born in 1990, currently resides in NYC, and Josephine, born 1993, currently attending Harvard University.

Wang’s gowns and coutures continue to take the main spotlight in various red carpets as well as in movies and television shows. Vera Wang still enjoys skating but launching fashion collections is her passion.

Whatever you pursue in life, never let one failure stop you from achieving success. You may pause and rest, but never quit. Let us be like Vera Wang. Keep going and remain strong until you become the best of the best.
