This catchy, get-stuck-in-your head tune was originally featured in the Academy-Award winning film, Slumdog Millionaire. The original version, sung by Indian singer Sukhwinder Singh and composed by noted Indian film composer and musician A.R. Rahman, nabbed the Best Original Song award at this year’s Academy awards.

According to Rahman, “Jai Ho,” or “Victory to You,” was meant to create “a vision of the whole world celebrating this victory”. Simply put, it is a victory song. When played during V events, every line and every beat of the song our collective accomplishments and triumphs.

In February of 2009, the popular all-female group the Pussycat Dolls released an English interpretation of the song, tagged as “Jai Ho! (You are my Destiny)”
